The 25 Species Angling competition is a unique fishing competition with a unique scoring system. The competition is open to all saltwater anglers from South Africa with the only qualifications being that an angler has to be a member of www.25species.co.za. The competition caters not only to the experienced anglers, but also to the juniors and ladies. Starting from 1 September 2011 and running till 31 July 2012 we will all fish for our respective top 25 species of fish. This is the 4th year the competition will be held and each year it is growing in leaps and bounds.
The competition will be fished on a measure-and-weight basis with a unique way of scoring. For the 2012 competition we have selected over 150 species of fish. This will give everyone anywhere in South Africa a fair chance to compete as you can now fish for the species endemic to your area and still score points.
New Rules and an Adapted Scoring System
3 Disciplines to Enter
Rock and Surf Main 25 Species Competition - (18 Edibles and 7 Non-Eds)
Boat Main 25 Species Competition - (20 Edibles and 5 Non-Eds)
Madfin Shark Series - (12 Non-Eds)
- You have to select one of the two Main Competitions - R&S or Boat - and pay an entry fee of R100.
- You then have the option to enter either 1 or both of the other competitions at a cost of R100 per competition.
There will be specific prizes allocated to all 3 competitions with the biggest prizes going to the combined 25 species fishing comp.
- Only the biggest fish / specie will count towards your points, not the total amount of a specific species, eg if you catch 5 Cob during the year only the biggest one will count.
- Fish caught from a boat may not count for your R&S entries and vice-versa.
- Any non-eds caught from a boat cannot count for the Madfin Shark Series.
- All catches must be uploaded with a photo of the measurements and your 2012 membership card. No exeptions! No pic WITH a membership card AND measuring tape, no points.
- Anglers fishing in the RASSPL competitions that have entered for any of the 25 Species comps may use their official RASSPL membership cards for photos
The Scoring System - New and Improved
We have made some significant changes to the scoring system from last year. Please take your time and read through the new scoring system.
We use both length AND weight to determine your points. Your length will be compared against the current SA record, and a weight bonus points will be added afterwards - 4 points / kg for edibles over 1 kg, and 1 point / kg for non-eds over 5 kg.
Length Points
We use the current SA Heavy Line Class record measurements from Fish Weights (SASAA tables) as the benchmark for scoring. Measure your fish, take the photos showing your membership card and measuring tape and post it on the Forum.
Make sure you post it in the correct category: R&S, Boat or Madfin
The database will automatically compare your measured catch against the current SA record and allocate your measured points as a % of that.
For example - the current SA Record for a Bronzie is 250 cm. If you catch a fish measuring 150 cm you will score150/250 *100 points (60 points).
Weight Points
Once you have measured your fish our system will calculate the correct weight for that fish. You will then be allocated 4 points / kg for edibles over 1 kg, and 1 point / kg for non-eds over 5 kg.
For example: Your 150cm bronzie weighs 45.67 kg according to the tables. You will then be allocated an additional 45.67 points for a total of 105.67
Bonus Points
Release Bonus
You will qualify for a 10% bonus on the total points (length + weight) for all fish released.
No more bonus points for tagging fish, but you are welcome to post that info as well.
Species Bonus
Additional points will be added for the number of different species you caught as a % of the 25 species - so if at the end of the competition you caught 5 different species of fish you will be allocated a bonus of 20%. If you catch 13 out of the 25 species you will have an additional 52% bonus allocated.
To qualify for 100% bonus you have to catch at least 17 edibles and 8 non edibles for the R&S comp or 20 edibles and 5 non-eds for the Boat Comp or 12 non-eds for the madfin Series. You cannot score more than 100% bonus, no matter how many species you catch.
